Traffic

A traffic jam on a highway

Description automatically generated

Since states have different highway budgets, system sizes, and traffic and geographic circumstances, their comparative performance depends on both system performance and the resources available. To determine relative performance across the country, state highway system budgets (per mile of responsibility) are compared with system performance, state-by-state.

Virginia’s highway system placed 2nd in the nation in performance and cost-effectiveness according to the Annual Highway Report.

Blue Ridge Parkway

The chart above ranks states whose Interstate systems are the most congested, have experienced the greatest increase in vehicle miles of travel (VMT) since 2000, are busiest (based on daily travel per lane mile), have the largest share of pavement in poor condition, and have the greatest share of bridges in poor/structurally deficient condition.
