The Sex Offender Registry
has moved away from the classification of offenders as either violent or
sexual. Instead, Virginia is moving to the Federal Tier system. There are
three tiers in the new system and offenders will be placed into one of the
following categories based on their offense.
Tier I (Formerly
Sexual Offender) Must register for a minimum of 15 years. Reregistration is
required yearly. Conviction of failing to register requires the offender to
reregister every 6months.
Tier II (Formerly
Sexual Offender) Must register for a minimum of 25 years. Reregistration is
required yearly. Conviction of failing to register requires the offender to
reregister every 6 months.
Tier
III (Formerly Sexually Violent Offender) Must register for life.
Reregistration is required
every
90 days. Conviction of failing to register requires the offender to
reregister every month.
