John Semo's life is a blend of dedication
and creativity. He married Liz, my wife's sister, and together they built a
family and a life full of good memories. John and Liz were blessed with two
remarkable sons, Larry and Johnny. Of the lasting memories of John's early
years was camping on Minong Flowage, where his love for the outdoors was
promoted. John's dedication to family extended beyond
his immediate household; he was always there to lend a helping hand. I
remember how he assisted with the move to our first purchased home in
Brookfield, Wisconsin, an act that showed his generosity and supportive
nature. Professionally, John had a significant
career working for the state of Wisconsin. His roles at the Poynette Game
Farm, Mirror Lake State Park, and eventually his retirement from Paterson
State Park, were testaments to his commitment to preserving the natural
beauty of Wisconsin. His passion for nature was not just a job but a calling
that he fulfilled with great pride and dedication. The homestead on Minong Flowage stands as a
symbol of John's hard work and ingenuity. What began as a simple garage
construction project gradually expanded into a cozy two-bedroom, one-bathroom
home, a testament to his skills and perseverance. John retired at the age of 57, but his
creative spirit continued to thrive. He discovered a passion for wood
carving, starting with caricature figures. Inspired by his uncle Lorance who
carved wooden ducks and donated some carving tools. His talent
flourished, leading to diverse bird and animal carvings that added income.
Liz and John attend local craft shows to sell these carvings. His artistry
delights many and leaves a lasting legacy. A
couple years after John's retirement, I also retired, and my wife Mary, our
son Bob, and I relocated to Minong, about 10 miles from the Semo homestead.
While our daughter Cathy and her family remain in Florida. We
reminisce about the past and discuss current events and senior moments while
playing pool approximately once a week. |
